Aotearoa: The Sound of New Zealand, Sound Pack captured by Young Artists

By 07-02-2019July 7th, 2025No Comments

Aotearoa is something truly special — a sound pack made entirely by my students as an assessment for the Electronic Music Course. It was a dream project to bring to life, and I’m proud to say that the best sounds from the entire group were picked up and released by Elektron.

So what does New Zealand sound like? We all know its stunning landscapes, but these young artists set out to document and reimagine its essence through sound — weaving together the wind, waves, traditional and industrial textures into one vivid sonic tapestry.

This collection, curated for Digitakt (and available as WAVs for any sampler), was crafted by students from the Electronic Music Course at the School of Music and Creative Media Production, Massey University, Wellington. Each sample carries the personal signature of its creator — Maxine Macaulay (MM), James Mills Workman (JMW), Max McAlpine (Max), Crystal Phillips (CP), Josh Dominikovich (JD), Barnaby Dromgool (BD), Noah Spargo (NS), Adam McDonald (AM), Calvin Corner (CC), Solomon Crook (SC), Caleb Sircombe (CLS), and Jacko Plumpton (JP).

In total, you’ll find 84 unique samples — the imagined, documented, and projected soundscape of Aotearoa. A beautiful harmony of nature and humanity, captured by the next generation of artists.
